Wanna change nation in FFXI? Is worth changing nation? One of my friends said to me: "I'm on Asura Server, I am in Bastok Nation which is NEVER first and almost always third. I think bastok is okay, but the surrounding area is duller than a stump. I have my ring from them so that was the only benefit. Now is it worth it to change nations? I just hit rank 5. I have a fair bit of CP(i think you lose them when you nation change correct?). But i am considering moving to sandy because the city is better, surrounding area is better and i have a much much better ability of doing the outpost supply quests when my nation actually controls more than S/N gusta and the Valkurm Dunes area."

I switched from Bastok to Sandy to do the Sandy missions, and Sandy never ever got control of a single Northlands region in the entire two months I was with them. It was a huge pain having to try to find a tele or hike all the way up the mountain everytime I needed to get up there.
If you've noticed another area that does particularly well in regions you'd like to get OPs in and don't already have, it might be worth switching. If you really want to do the missions, it might be worth switching. Otherwise I'd stay where you are. It's really not worth it just for a change in scenery.
That is a matter of personal opinion. I'm currently in the process of switching to other nations and doing the missions, simply to see the storyline (and to try and understand how the different nation storylines are merged). I've been Rank10 Bastok for quite some years, but with the patch allowing you to keep OP Warps etc. I switched to Windurst first and got Rank 10 (btw, Windurst has a much nicer storyline than Bastok ) and will be switching to San d'Oria soon to complete my collection of flags once we have repeated the Bastok missions again for the other members of the static.
Fortunately, on my server (Hades) all nations are doing more or less equally well (though Bastok is more often than not last or second, they do manage to get first regularly and as a Bastokan I even have the Sarutabaruta OP, only one missing is Ronfaure). Getting the OPs back wasn't as hard as I had feared, but it depends on the performance of the nation you switched to, of course.
Getting around without or with a limited number of OPs isn't as bad either, since there are tons of other options now. Teleport rings (including Olduum, Mea/Dem/Holla/Tavnazian/...), WHM teleports if you have the job leveled high enough, BLM Warp/Retrace if you have the job leveled high enough, teleport NPC in the cities, Nomad moogles everywhere allowing you to easily switch jobs, chocobo NPC's popping up everywhere, MAWs to teletimeport around.
